Yobe upgrades 5 general hospitals to specialist status
The Yobe State Government has upgraded five general hospitals to specialist hospitals to strengthen healthcare service delivery across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Abubakar Yerima, disclosed this while addressing journalists during a media tour of the facilities.
Speaking in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area, Dr Yerima said the upgraded hospitals were equipped to provide specialised medical services and reduce pressure on existing health centres.
He explained that the general hospitals in Gashua, Geidam, Potiskum, Damaturu and Buni Yadi were elevated to specialist status due to their high patient volumes.
He said the facilities will now serve as referral centres, receiving patients from general hospitals and primary healthcare centres within their respective zones.
Dr. Yerima added that the government had employed about 2,500 healthcare workers over the past year to address manpower gaps and meet international standards.
He further disclosed that consultant specialists are being recruited monthly, while between 60 and 70 medical personnel are currently enrolled in residency training programmes.
