Bayelsa community raises alarm over oil spill
The people of Agge community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have raised the alarm over a massive oil spill at Bonga Oil Field operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and its joint ventures.
The people complained that both the indigenes and residents of the area are now falling sick as a result of drinking from the polluted water, as well as feeding on the dead aquatic life in the rivers.
The paramount ruler of the Agge community, Chief Precious Isiaye, while speaking with newsmen in the community, lamented the spill which started January 24th, 2026, saying that the facility is still spilling crude into the river as well as hydrocodone to the air.
He expressed frustration that since the spill started, the operators, SPDC, have yet to carry out any remediation in the facility, while no compensation has been given to the community to help those who have fallen ill to treat themselves.
Irked by the latest oil spill, the people said they were giving a one-week ultimatum to the SPDC and other relevant bodies for proper clean-up and remediation or face protest.
Daily Trust recalls that in March 2025, SPDC divested its onshore assets in Nigeria to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.
The spokesperson for Renaissance Energy, Mr Michael Adande, said they don’t own the Bonga oil field and he’s not aware of any incident there.
He, however, promised to investigate the spill.
