10-man Rivers United inflict ninth defeat on Kano Pillars
Ten-man Rivers United put aside their poor performance in the Group stage of the CAF Champions League to defeat Kano Pillars 1-0 in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) rescheduled Week 15 match played yesterday at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port-Harcourt.
Although the hosts were reduced to 10 players following the red card to their defender Isaac Annor in the 84th minute, the “Pride of Rivers” still found the winning goal before the referee’s final whistle.
Pillars thought they were running away with a vital point on the road, but six minutes after the dismissal of Annor, David Sholumade scored the back-breaking goal to hand Rivers United the maximum points.
The hard-earned victory over Kano Pillars lifted Rivers United to third position on the table.
With 26 points and two outstanding matches, only one point is separating Rivers United from leaders Ikorodu City.
Rivers United have won seven, drawn five and lost only one match in 13 matches they have played so far.
Meanwhile, Kano Pillars are glued to the bottom of the table with a miserable nine points out of a possible 45.
The former champions of Nigeria have managed three victories, three draws, while suffering nine defeats in 15 matches.
In the rescheduled Week 13 match, defending champions, Remo Stars, suffered a slim 0-1 loss to 3SC in the south-west derby at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Remo Stars, who had suffered seven losses before yesterday’s match, arrived at Ibadan with intention to avoid another defeat but were undone by the hosts who showed more hunger for victory.
Ismail Ayodele’s strike in the 35th minute was enough to hand 3SC the much needed victory.
3SC had recorded only one win in their last five matches. The “Oluyole Warriors” defeated Abia Warriors 2-0, lost 0-2 at Wikki Tourists, were forced to a 1-1 draw at home by Katsina United, and beaten 1-0 t Enugu Rangers, before the goalless draw against Kwara United in Ilorin.
