Queens Park Rangers will auction the only shirt ever made for Peter Odemwingie ahead of his failed transfer from West Brom in January 2013, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigeria international had believed he had completed a deadline day switch to QPR and arrived at Loftus Road expecting to finalise the move.
“Queens Park Rangers auctioned the only shirt ever made for Peter Odemwingie on Wednesday, which had been prepared ahead of his failed transfer from West Brom in January 2013,” Sky Sports reported.
Instead, Odemwingie was left in his car outside the stadium after both clubs insisted a fee had not been agreed, leaving the transfer unfinished.
In anticipation of the deal, QPR’s head of retail, Francis Atkinson, had prepared a shirt bearing Odemwingie’s name and number.
Odemwingie’s attempted move caused a stir at the time, with the forward having won three Premier League Player of the Month awards with West Brom. The dramatic episode saw him arrive at Loftus Road without permission from the Baggies, summing up the unusual nature of the transfer saga.
Although he eventually remained at West Brom for the rest of the season, Odemwingie left the club for Cardiff City in the summer of 2013.
During his time at The Hawthorns, he scored 31 goals and provided 14 assists in 90 appearances, including two seasons with 10 or more Premier League goals. His £2.5million signing from Lokomotiv Moscow remains remembered as a bargain in today’s inflated market.
The auction of the shirt offers collectors a unique piece of football history, a reminder of one of the Premier League’s most notorious transfer stories.
Meanwhile, West Brom continue to seek attacking reinforcements, with former players like Odemwingie still viewed as examples of the kind of talent the club needs to replicate success in the top flight.
