Defection: Mutfwang picks up APC membership card

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has formally received a membership card of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mutfwang had on Thursday tendered his resignation letter to his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) weeks after announcing his intention to join APC.

Receiving his membership card on Friday at the state headquarters of the party, Gov Mutfwang pledged that Plateau would deliver over one million votes to President Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming 2027 election.

“Let me say, wholeheartedly, that having prayed and consulted, I have decided to accept the membership of the APC. I’m excited because one of the things I have dreamt about is that Plateau should be united and today, I’m beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

The governor added that, “In the days of former Governor Joshua Dariye, Plateau was very polarised. When Ex-Governor Jonah Jang took over, there were sharp divisions. When my brother Lalong took over – oh my God, I never set foot inside the Government house; you know what I’m saying. The divisions were very clear. When I took over, the divisions also got worse.

“I prayed silently. One thing I prayed was that may God cause Governor Lalong to fall into my hands. And today, I have captured you. And today, we have come to a meeting. Thank you. I got it. Let me remind you: we fought a very acrimonious election. I went to the Supreme Court not knowing anyone, except that they know who they know.

“There was somebody waiting for us that we did not know, and that was the God of heaven. Today, it has pleased that God to bring us together. God is a miracle worker. Today, we are laying the foundation for a new Plateau, a Plateau where acrimony is reduced to the barest minimum. Together with the national leadership of our party and the rest of our leaders, we will ensure that Plateau has a seat at the discussion table. I look forward to one of the most peaceful elections in the history of Plateau State in 2027,” he added.

Speaking earlier, the State APC Chairman, Hon Rufus Bature, while presenting the membership card to the governor said, “Today’s event is very significant for us in the All Progressives Congress because, like the scriptures of Christians say in Ecclesiastes, ‘for everything there is a time and the time is now’.

“Today, we are marking a significant event that will be recalled in the annals of history of Plateau in years to come. Having fulfilled all the requirements of the party constitution, we accord to you all the privileges as enshrined in the APC Constitution,” the chairman said.

The occasion was witnessed by critical APC stakeholders including Senator Simon Lalong, Senator Diket Plang, and Rep member Yusuf Gagdi, among others.
