FG urges ICAN to back government’s tax reforms, policy initiatives
The federal government has urged the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to support the administration’s tax reforms and other policy initiatives ahead of the rollout of the 2026 tax regime.
Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, made appeal when the 64th President of ICAN, Malam Haruna Yahaya, led members of the institute’s council on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja on Friday.

Idris said accountants have played an important role in promoting transparency and integrity within Nigeria’s financial system, adding that the Tinubu administration is committed to partnerships that strengthen accountability and institutions across the country.
He said the government’s ongoing reforms, including the new tax policy scheduled to begin in January 2026, require the support of key professional bodies like ICAN.
“The promotion of accurate information, public orientation, and responsible governance is central to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda,” Idris said. “We call on ICAN to support these reforms and champion them within your financial and professional spheres.”
The minister noted that government is open to deeper engagement with ICAN, especially in areas that improve public communication, enhance financial literacy, and promote professionalism within public institutions.
Earlier, Yahaya commended the minister for efforts to rebuild trust in public information and strengthen national cohesion since assuming office in 2023.
He said ICAN had observed the ministry’s work in promoting transparency and accountability and expressed satisfaction with its achievements, including securing the hosting right for the UNESCO Category 2 Media Literacy Institute in Abuja.
Yahaya reaffirmed ICAN’s readiness to collaborate with the ministry in areas that contribute to national development.
