Nasarawa gov’t appeals to lecturers to call off strike
From Abubakar Abdullahi Lafia
The Nasarawa State Government has appealed to lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions, who are on strike, to call off the industrial action.
The lecturers, members of the Joint Unions of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI), began an indefinite strike on December 29, 2025, over alleged government’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage.
Speaking at a bi-monthly press briefing in Lafia, Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, urged the lecturers to resume duties and allow the government to negotiate with them.
“We are in January, schools are expected to resume with academic activities, and then we are having this strike. This is capable of affecting our children,” Ahemba said.
Ahemba appealed to the lecturers to “come back to the drawing table” and suspend the strike to allow for further negotiations.
The strike was announced by JUNSTI Chairman Samson Kale Gbande, who lamented that the government had failed to meet agreements reached on the minimum wage despite several meetings.
Gbande expressed concern over the government’s delay in implementing the salary structure, saying it affects workforce productivity and stability in the education sector.
He said the union had met with the government on August 6, October 23, December 3, and December 15, 2025, but assurances of implementing the new wage hadn’t translated into action.
The lecturers are seeking implementation of the new national minimum wage, which they say has been agreed upon, but not acted on by the government.
The government is urging the lecturers to resume work, while negotiations continue to minimize the impact on students and the education sector.
