Female banker jailed 10 years for fraud
A female employee of Taj Bank’s Naibawa branch in Kano, Janet Theophilus Danjuma, has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for defrauding a customer, Wale Bamaiyi, in August 2025.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Danjuma on a two-count charge.
She was accused of convincing Bamaiyi to entrust her with N22 million for a non-existent high-yield investment scheme and receiving N350,000 as a commission for services rendered.
These actions, according to the EFCC, contravene the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, respectively.
A tearful Janet Danjuma pleaded guilty to the charges but appealed to the trial judge for leniency.
She claimed she had no initial intention to defraud the customer, stating that her husband had left her and there would be no one to care for her child if she were incarcerated.
Following her guilty plea, EFCC counsel, M. Husseini, urged the court to convict her and requested a restitution order to recover property in her possession.
The counsel noted that offences under the Advance Fee Fraud Act carry a penalty of not less than seven years and not more than 20 years imprisonment.
Presiding Justice S.M. Shuaibu remarked that “dishonest ways do not pay” and sentenced Danjuma to five years imprisonment on each count, without the option of a fine.
He said the sentences are to run concurrently, meaning that the convict will serve a total of five years in prison.
The trial judge, however, remained silent on the requested restitution order.
Justice Shuaibu stated that if the prosecution was dissatisfied with the judgment, they could appeal the verdict, averring that the court would not issue an order that might not be obeyed.
