Democracy at risk without youths’ participation – Prof Jega

A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has urged Nigerian youths to actively participate in politics, insisting that their engagement is crucial to strengthening the country’s democracy.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by the Federal University Kashere (FUK) in Gombe State titled: “Elections and Good Governance in Nigeria”, Jega said young people must move from the sidelines to the centre of political action.

He noted that youths’ involvement would inject fresh ideas into governance and help address Nigeria’s persistent challenges, noting that the ballot remained the most effective tool for renewing leadership, hence that youths “must embrace the process to effect positive change.”

Jega expressed concern over the growing disinterest among young Nigerians, blaming it on bad governance, weak electoral trust and the poor performance of some public officials.

He warned that political actors undermining democracy would continue to thrive if youths remained disengaged. He urged young people to organise, obtain their PVCs and join political parties, calling disengagement “self-sabotaging.” The government, he added, must also improve electoral integrity to rebuild confidence.
