
Army begins investigation into minor’s killing in Akwa Ibom
…says it’s unfortunate
The Nigerian Army has described the killing of a minor by a soldier in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as unfortunate.
Timothy Daniel, a 13-year-old boy was reportedly shot and killed by a soldier on New Year Day, sparking outrage in the State.
Lawal Bala Muhammad, a Captain and Assistant Firector, Armublic Relations, 2 Brigade Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said in a statement that an investigation had commenced to find out the remote and immediate causes of the incident.
“In line with standard procedures, the Nigerian Army immediately instituted an investigation to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation is currently ongoing, and no findings or conclusions have been reached at this stage.
“Accordingly, the Nigerian Army urges the general public to refrain from speculation or commentary that may prejudice the investigative process. The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion, in accordance with extant laws and regulations”, it stated.
While expressing its sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Timothy Daniel and commiserating with them over his loss, it offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
“The Nigerian Army appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the general public and reiterates its unwavering commitment to professionalism, strict adherence to the rules of engagement, and accountability in the conduct of its personnel”, the statement added.
The soldier is said to have shot the minor after the boy had expressed displeasure over the soldier’s attempt to sexually assault her 15-year-old sister after the soldier had touched her inappropriately when both were returning from a cross-over night church programme.
