Fire razes Mobile Police office, armoury in Benue
A mid-morning fire on Sunday gutted the office complex and armoury of Mobile Police Squadron 13 (Mopol 13) of the Nigeria Police Force in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
Our correspondent reports that the fire destroyed several offices and critical facilities at the Mopol headquarters located closely to the Benue State Police Command headquarters in Makurdi.
The fire outbreak which reportedly started around 10am razed parts of the police facility, including the Squadron Commander’s office and the armoury section.
Witnesses told journalists that the fire started from one of the offices at about 10am and then spread to other sides of the building.
“I was on morning duty when I noticed smoke coming out from the Squadron Commander’s office. As I tried to find out what was happening, heavy flames suddenly erupted and everything got burnt,” a witness who declined to mention his name said.
The witness also said that efforts were made to alert senior officers, who in turn contacted the fire service, but the fire had already spread rapidly before firefighters arrived.
Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, while the extent of damage, particularly to the armoury, remained unclear.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said the command was aware of the fire outbreak at the Mopol 13 facility in Makurdi and would provide further details later.
“Yes, I am aware of the fire outbreak at the Mopol 13 facility in Makurdi, but I will get back to you,” she said.
