Court reverses dissolution of NNPP excos, affirms Kano gov’s loyalist as chair
A Kano State High Court has set aside the dissolution of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) executive councils at the state, local government and ward levels in Kano, declaring the action taken by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) null and void.
Justice Nasiru Saminu, in an ex parte order granted on Tuesday, also restrained the NWC from taking any further steps affecting the leadership structure of the party in Kano pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by the plaintiffs.
The court order restrained the NNPP, its agents, privies, ad hoc committees, the National Working Committee or any other persons acting on its instructions from appointing caretaker committees at the state, local government or ward levels in Kano or taking any further steps relating to the subject matter of the suit.
The ruling effectively restores the NNPP leadership structure in Kano as it existed before the NWC’s intervention, thereby affirming Hon. Abdullahi Abiya, a known loyalist of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the acting chairman of the party in the state following the purported expulsion of the substantive chairman, Hashim Dungurawa, an ally of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The NNPP’s national leadership had earlier announced the dissolution of the party’s executive councils across Kano following the expulsion of Dungurawa as state chairman. The NWC subsequently named Abdullahi Abiya as acting chairman, a move that deepened internal tensions within the party.
Dungurawa’s expulsion and replacement were widely interpreted as part of the growing rift within the NNPP in Kano, particularly amid speculation over Governor Yusuf’s political future and his strained relationship with the party’s national leader, Kwankwaso.
