Kano Hisbah intercepts suspected human traffickers, rescues 3 minors
The Kano State Hisbah Board has uncovered a suspected human trafficking syndicate involving three underage girls and two alleged traffickers in an operation that took place under the Fagge flyover earlier this week.
Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, Dr. Mujahiddin Aminuddin, confirmed the development in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday.
According to him, Hisbah personnel moved in swiftly after members of the public reported a heated argument between the two adults, an incident that raised suspicion and prompted intervention.
The suspects were identified as Habibu Idris, 45, from Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State, and Basirat Tijjani, 58, from Oyo State. They were found in the company of three girls from Kazaure, Jigawa State: Kubariyya Amadu, 14; Rukayya Umar, 17; and Rashida Usaini, 14.
Dr. Aminuddin explained that preliminary investigations revealed that Habibu had been transporting children from Kano to Basirat in Oyo State for monetary rewards.
He noted that Habibu, who previously charged N10,000 per child, had recently raised the fee to N15,000, a change Basirat rejected. The disagreement between them ultimately exposed the illicit activity.
“Neither the woman nor her agent could state clearly where the children were being taken to. Their concern was the money involved,” Dr. Aminuddin said, adding that the young girls had no knowledge of their intended destination.
He expressed worry over what he described as growing parental neglect, stressing that some parents now hand over their children without questioning their safety, welfare, or future.
“Parents must understand that their children’s education, health, and protection are their primary responsibilities. Sadly, many now see their own children as burdens and push them into dangerous situations,” he said.
The Hisbah Board has since handed over the suspects and the rescued girls to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and necessary action.
