The Bureau of Public Procurement and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the application of Nigerian Industrial Standards in Federal Government procurement, reinforcing the Nigeria First policy.
According to a statement by the BPP’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Zira Nagga, and SON’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Talatu Ethan on Wednesday, “the MoU, signed at the BPP headquarters in Abuja, formalises a partnership to ensure that all goods, works, and services procured by the government comply with relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards. It also promotes the adoption of local content and the use of Made-in-Nigeria products that meet approved quality benchmarks.
The agreement was signed by the Director-General of BPP, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun and the Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of quality assurance, transparency, and value-for-money in public procurement.
“This MoU underscores our commitment to advancing local production, improving project outcomes, and ensuring that government procurement directly benefits Nigerians,” Adedokun said.
The partnership aligns with the Nigeria First policy, which aims to stimulate local industries, create jobs, and reduce reliance on imported products. By ensuring that public procurement follows Nigerian Industrial Standards, the MoU guarantees that government projects use quality, safe, and reliable products, while fostering competitiveness and accountability in public spending.
The BPP oversees government procurement to maintain transparency and fairness, while the SON enforces standards to ensure products and services meet safety, quality, and reliability benchmarks. Together, their collaboration represents a strategic step toward stronger local industries and better government projects for Nigerians.
