Senator Jika happy with Abuja Guards Polo Club’s giant strides
The President of the Abuja Guards Polo Club, Senator Haliru Jika, has expressed satisfaction with the outstanding accomplishments recorded by the club in recent years.
He also declared that the club now dominates polo across West Africa, not just Nigeria.
Jika spoke with journalists in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2025 National Polo Carnival, themed “Signature of the Experience,” said the tournament which started on December 1 will climax on December 14 “We have taken over the game of polo in the entire West Africa, not just Nigeria.
“I think this club houses the highest number of Argentine Toro-bred horses in Nigeria. There’s no doubt we are ahead of Lagos,” he said.
Jika said the club’s facilities were overstretched, with over 70 matches expected during the carnival.
The club, he noted, was seeking partnerships to expand its facilities and strengthen player development.
“We are now trying to look outward to diversify,” he said, listing JAIZ Bank, FSDH and PopCola as current partners. JAIZ Bank Executive Director, Alhassan Abdulkarim, said the bank returned as a sponsor because polo was attracting young Nigerians.
He described the sponsorship as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility to promote unity and sportsmanship. FSDH Regional Manager, Olufayin Adeniyi, said the tournament aligned with the firm’s commitment to sports development.
“It’s a prestigious tournament that brings people together and boosts the economy,” she said.
PopCola’s Abuja head, Nassim Basma Abdelkarim, said sports remains a strong platform for youth motivation and a tool against social vices.
