Obi seeks focus on drug abuse, rights violations

A former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has called for urgent national attention to drug abuse and human rights violations in Nigeria.

He made the call at the 25th anniversary celebration of ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) in Abuja, where the group also launched 25 Years Legacy Book, unveiled the prototype for its new building and awarded outstanding personalities and staff.

Obi said the extent of the country’s current challenges should compel civil society organisations and development partners to intensify their interventions rather than slow down.

He urged ActionAid and other civil society partners to scale up their work in advocacy, empowerment and social protection, insisting that Nigeria’s worsening indicators show that “the country cannot afford complacency.”

Obi, who, however, expressed optimism, said women and young people are increasingly driving movements for change.

He assured that the organisation remains firmly committed to tackling poverty, inequality and exclusion through citizen-driven initiative.

Also, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the anniversary is not merely a commemoration of a lifetime of work, but also a celebration of meaningful impact and lasting partnership, especially in Nigeria.

He said for a quarter of a century, ActionAid has taken development to the front lines in empowering women and girls, strengthening education, improving healthcare, advocating for governance reforms, supporting communities during crises, and amplifying the voices of the most vulnerable.

“I want all Nigerians to know that our common enemy is not our own brothers and sisters. Our common enemies are these terrorists, these criminals, and these bandits who have made a resolution to pit us against each other and deny us the sleep and unity we require to build a prosperous nation.

“While we admit to having security challenges resulting in the loss of human lives and materials, and often leading to human displacement, our country Nigeria is in no way a violator of religious freedom.

“Let me reassure Nigerians and our partners here today that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue to respond swiftly, decisively, and compassionately wherever citizens, especially children are in danger,” he said.

The Country Director AAN, Andrew Mamedu, said the organisation’s 25-year journey had been driven by a commitment to challenge injustice, empower marginalised groups and promote inclusive, community-led development efforts across the country.

Also speaking, Rabi Isma, Chair of the ActionAid Nigeria Board, emphasised the organisation’s consistent approach to promoting equity and addressing structural inequalities.
